The Withdrawals, a quintet from
Albuquerque, NM, formed in 1994 and has
released two CDs to date, their self titled ep released
in 95 & their most recent release, SMILE.
The Withdrawals have a full sound
with
punchy rhythms, catchy hooks and a powerful
blues-rock base. Likely influences include
Blues Traveler and the Spin Doctors, although the band doesn't
really sound like either. The Grateful Dead is even
reminiscent in "Man on
the
Mountain," but there are decidedly more funk-rock elements
in the sound.
The group is at its most original
in the powerhouse rock of "Gypsy Woman"
and the southwestern textures of "Anima."
The latter features a great vocal and some
crisp guitar playing. Also of note is the funk-filled "Walking."
This is one of the most unique sounds to hit the
scene in a long time, buy this album and you
will be pleasantly surprised with its originality and its
musicality.
